Choice of materials is an important aspect of any work on a Modernist home. Simplicity and functionality are key features, allied with organic textures and forms. All must meet in a consistent manner to preserve the home and the investment. Tile is one of the key materials.

Available from Modernist Resource are a variety of tiles with very strong roots in the Modernist tradition. The glazed ceramic tiles are an exclusive recreation of Modernist designs. Our smaller unglazed porcelain mosaic tiles are available from us in both rectangles and squares, in a number of arrangements and colors to satisfy your needs for a Mid-Century aesthetic. All but the large rectangles are suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Modified diamond

This pattern evokes the Modernist ideal of sculptural simplicity. Hand cut and made of frost proof clay, the size is 5 1/2” X 2 1/2”. Suitable for vertical or horizontal installation. Shown is a turquoise blend. Contact us for pricing and additional colors.

Bow tie

The playful symmetry of the Bow Tie pattern is appropriate for many applications that require a more dynamic solution. Hand cut and made of frost proof clay, the size is 5 1/2” X 1 1/2”. Rectangle

The simple form of the rectangle was often an element in Modernist design, from the architecture, to the furniture, to the tile. Hand cut from a talc clay body, the size of this classic pattern is 2” X 6”. Suitable for horizontal or vertical installation, it is appropriate for interior use only. Triangles and points

Unglazed

Unglazed porcelain mosaic tiles were a commonly specified element in some of the most notable buildings of the Modernist period. Patterns are specified as a main color field, with a percentage of “drops” or signature colors added. The elegant functionality of this tile material is often associated with designers of the period, such as Neutra, Koenig, Johnson, and van der Rohe. Our patterns are available as 1” X 1” squares, 1” X 2” rectangles, or a combination of both. They are suitable for both horizontal and vertical installation. Commonly used in bathrooms, they can be used anywhere that a durable tile surface is desired. Shown is both a blues blend, as well as a forest blend in residential bathrooms.
